Three Serums in One: A look at Rénergie H.C.F. Triple Serum’s Innovative Packaging
Discover the science and packaging of Rénergie H.C.F. Triple Serum – an anti-aging product with three serums housed in three chambers.
Face serums are a product you can use in your skincare routine. Whilst a moisturizer provides hydration, serums typically have a lighter texture than creams and absorb quickly into skin surface and are designed to provide a range of targeted benefits.
Our new Rénergie H.C.F. Triple Serum is a revolutionary anti-aging serum with its impressive packaging. This serum contains not one, but three serums with three different textures (a gel, cream, and emulsion) and powerful ingredients including Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C+Niacinamide, and Ferulic Acid. Each serum is housed in its own chamber and with each pump of the product, the ingredients from the three chambers are freshly mixed and the different textures from each chamber turn into a blended lightweight, smooth, and fast-absorbing, texture.
Our Expert’s Guide to Rénergie H.C.F. Triple Serum
Its unique triple-chamber packaging and combination of different serums, ingredients, texture, and freshly mixed ingredients are just some of the reasons this serum is revolutionary -- but all this talk of chambers and mixtures of serums and ingredients can be a little overwhelming. To help really understand the science behind Rénergie H.C.F. Triple Serum and how the packaging works we asked Kayte Epperly, Scientific Communication Liaison at L’Oreal Research & Innovation US Skin Care Development to talk us through the new serum.
Rénergie H.C.F. Serum is described as a “triple dose serum” can you talk us through what this actually means?
Triple dose refers to the combination of ingredients we have in three separate serums that when dispensed combine to form one serum. The triple dose is made up of an anti-aging, antioxidant, and a brightening serum.
The serum features triple-chamber packaging – what was the reasoning behind this and how does it differ than all the ingredients packaged together in one serum?
The three chambers allow for more versatility in formulation. Ferulic Acid is happier in an anhydrous formulation but some of the other star ingredients are unable to be formulated in that environment. Having Ferulic Acid in an anhydrous formula helps to protect it from degradation and preserve its potency. Anhydrous formulas can be known to have an unpleasant texture, so formulating them each individually allows for a more favorable end texture on application while maximizing the potency of the Ferulic Acid. This also allows the other ingredients to be formulated in an environment that maximizes their skin benefits.
So as we can read: the triple-chamber packaging allows for each ingredient to be freshly mixed with each application and this helps to maintain higher levels of potency and stability than if the ingredients were already formulated together within the same chamber. How important is it for ingredients to maintain stability and potency in skincare? How long does it usually take for ingredients to start to lose their efficacy and are there particular ingredients which are less stable?
Ferulic Acid is known to be a difficult molecule to stabilize as it is sensitive to temperature and pH in an aqueous formula. This means that if the formula environment doesn’t remain stable it can cause it to degrade and reduce its efficacy.
Degradation of ingredients can vary from ingredient to ingredient and how they are formulated can impact their stability as well. When ingredients start to lose their potency, the formula will then start to lose its benefits.
The triple chamber packaging contains three serums of different textures in one pump: A creamy serum with Hyaluronic Acid, a Light-Emulsion Serum with C+Niacinamide, and a Gel Serum with Ferulic Acid. How do all these serums manage to work together and blend together seamlessly? What is the benefit of this?
One of the benefits is that we get a nice creamy texture with Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C, Niacinamide, and Ferulic Acid. The primary benefit is that we are able to maintain the potency of a difficult to stabilize ingredient (Ferulic Acid) to try to maximize its benefit while pairing it with additional ingredients for a well-rounded product to see improvement of fine lines, wrinkles, radiance, skin tone evenness, and dark spots.
What science and thought came about to create H.C.F serum with three different chambers? How long did the process take to come up with the concept?
The formulation and packaging teams spent more than three years developing the formulas to ensure that the combination of the three different serums worked best together with the packaging.
Were there any special precautions that had to be taken with creating this “triple dose” serum as opposed to other face serums Lancôme has formulated?
The formula and way in which it flows is always an important aspect when developing a product in a pump packaging and was very necessary to consider when developing the three formulas. All three serums needed to have the appropriate rheology to easily dispense from the pack as well as ensure that all three chambers dispensed the same amount. The pack is also airless, which helps to preserve the stability and efficacy.
Is there anything people should know before they use the product H.C.F Triple Serum?
It’s important to prime the pump prior to the first use. To do this hold the package upright just pump the packaging a few times until the product starts to dispense. Once primed, dispense product into the palm of your hand and blend the serums together before applying to face.
