The Beauty Expert's Guide to Anti-Wrinkle Cream
Wrinkles don’t happen overnight- even though it sometimes feels like they do.
You can probably relate. You are going about your day, feeling satisfied, and then you catch your 3 pm reflection and notice for the first time that you have fine lines. (Insert sad face emoji.) So where exactly do wrinkles come from, why do we get them, and what can you do about them? Let Lancôme International Cabins Development and Training Director, Karolina Abdel Bary, explain.
What are the first sings of aging I’ll notice?
Lancôme: Signs of aging—what a scary thought! When we think about ageing, it can be easy to jump to the idea of being ‘old.’ But long before you get to that point, there are differences you’ll start to see and feel. ‘Change’ is a key world. At first it may be that the pores on your face start to look more visible, the texture of your skin is uneven (maybe it’s less smooth on the cheeks), or your skin is starting to look a little tired and dull. Your glow may be fading, and fine lines might be cropping up.
What are the causes of wrinkles and fine lines?
Lancôme: There are many factors, but aging can be broken into two main categories. First, there’s chronological, intrinsic, or “natural” aging, which is simply the passing of time. You start getting fine lines exactly where you smile or between your eyebrows from scrunching your face. The second form is extrinsic, or environmental, aging. This is your lifestyle—your exposure to the sun, your diet, how much pollution you’re exposed to (we know for a fact that pollution can accelerate inflammation and therefore signs of aging), whether you smoke or drink. Environmental aging can speed up your natural aging. In fact, it’s proven that your lifestyle can age you faster than genetics.
When should I start using anti-aging products?
Lancôme: The sooner the better. The first wrinkles appear around your eyes, your forehead and your nasolabial folds. Start young and with a moisturizing anti-wrinkle cream that has SPF 15 at least.
What can I do about signs of aging?
Lancôme: It depends—are you looking to prevent wrinkles or minimize existing wrinkles? If it is to prevent them, use a good moisturizer that helps keep your skin hydrated day and night, and daily SPF protection (at least SPF 15). If you already have visible wrinkles, we have a few different solutions: Visionnaire anti-aging skincare line attenuates your first wrinkles, Rénergie anti-wrinkle cream is for when you have wrinkles plus a loss of firmness (it has two actions), and Absolue is a global anti-aging cream (meaning it attenuates all signs of aging) with advanced technologies and luxurious textures.
How often do I need to apply my anti-wrinkle products?
Lancôme: It should be a part of your daily skincare routine. Use them every day and every night; make it a habit.
What is your favorite anti-wrinkle cream, and why?
Lancôme: My favorite anti-wrinkle cream is Rénergie Multi-Lift, especially for the summertime. It has a light texture, protects from the sun, works to even skin tone and texture, and has skin firming and lifting benefits.
How to Reduce Wrinkles in 6 Steps:
Step 1: Protect from Pollution
Two things you need to do on a daily basis to protect skin from inflammation-causing pollution: Keep your skin clean and apply anti-aging products with antioxidants. We like Miel-En-Mousse Foaming Cleaning Makeup Remover, which has a honey-like texture that melts away makeup and impurities and Energie de Vie Liquid Care Moisturizer. It contains Vitamin E, an antioxidant, making it ideal for a day moisturizer.
Step 2: Be Sun Smart
Consider walking on the shady side of the street, and wear SPF, like UV Expert Agua Gel SPF 50 sunscreen for face, daily (no exceptions—even it’s an overcast and rainy day).
Step 3: Stay Hydrated
Dry skin looks dull and shows signs of aging much quicker. It’s easy to keep it hydrated, though—drink plenty of water throughout the day (keep a bottle at your desk as a reminder) and apply moisturizer, like Rénergie Multi-Lift anti-wrinkle cream, to your face twice a day.
Step 4: Never Neglect Your Eyes
Eyes are often the first place wrinkles develop. Going outside on a sunny day? Remember to wear your sunglasses. And just like your moisturizer, apply an eye cream twice a day—the sooner you start, the better.
Step: 5: Keep a Healthy Lifestyle
In 2018, we all know better than to smoke, and it’s one of the worst things you can do for your complexion. Also limit alcohol intake, get plenty of exercise, and eat clean, fresh foods.
Step 6: Massage Your Face
French women have a secret for keeping their skin looking so perfect: They are not afraid to touch their faces. One of our favorite, and easiest, facial massages goes hand-in-hand with our Rénergie skincare products. After applying your anti-wrinkle cream, take your hands and glide them along the outline of your jawline six times, then make sweeping motions up each side of your face, repeating from the bottom to top six times. Finish by using your fingers to make vertical sweeps on your forehead (three times on each side of your face).
