Mascara is a go-to product and it’s often that one makeup product we won’t leave the house without. A quick swipe on the lashes before you head out the door can instantly leave you polished – but what if instead of rushing your application you took a little more time to apply your mascara for a beautiful and enviable lash combination? Lean into your inner mixologist and try mascara cocktailing.
What is Mascara Cocktailing?
Mascara cocktailing may sound like another beauty industry buzz word – but it’s something you may have done before. Many people have layered mascaras together to create a customized lash look and this is exactly what mascara cocktailing involves.
Mascara cocktailing is the technique of “mascara mixology”; using multiple mascara formulas and wands, layering them on top of one another so you can get the ultimate benefits out of each (typically a volumizing mascara and a lengthening mascara). You can start with two mascaras or even amp up your lashes to include three different mascaras.
How to Layer Mascara
Layering mascara may seem simple and easy but layering mascaras to create a phenomenal lash look does require a few key pointers.
Tip 1: Curl Lashes
Lash curling is a beauty tip and lash tip that has continuously stood the test of time. On clean, dry lashes use a lash curler to help give lashes additional lift and create a visible lengthening effect. Hold the lash curler at the base of the lashes and squeeze for 2-3 seconds.
Tip 2: Use a Mascara Primer
The first step to layering your mascara is to include a mascara primer in your mascara cocktailing routine. A mascara primer can work to create a base for your mascara, intensify the pigment of your mascara, and add extra volume and length. Our Cils Booster XL Enhancing Lash Primer is perfect for mascara layering. Apply mascara primer to clean, dry lashes and immediately after application apply your mascaras.
Tip 3: Choose Two Different Formulas
The key to a successful mascara cocktail is to pick two mascaras that serve a different purpose. Start with a lengthening and lifting mascara like Lash Idôle and then use a volumizing mascara like Monsieur Big.
Tip 4: Work Quickly
Whilst it may be tempting to let each coat of mascara dry as though it were a coat of paint – when it comes to mascara cocktailing it’s best to work quickly to avoid mascara clumps. After applying your first coat of mascara move onto your second mascara formula.
Tip 5: Apply a layer of Waterproof Mascara
Waterproof mascara can be a great product to include in your lash routine but one of its frustrating parts is its difficult removal process. Consider applying a layer of washable mascara to the lashes first and then using a waterproof mascara variation for your second coat. This technique means the waterproof mascara will grip to the other mascara layer and not your natural lashes (thus making removal easier)
Mascara Cocktail: Lash Idôle & Monsieur Big
When looking to create your perfect mascara cocktail and lash routine you will want to select two different mascara formulas that target different lash concerns. Our recommended duo? Lash Idôle Lifting Mascara and Monsieur Big Volumizing Mascara.
Lash Idôle Mascara
Lash Idôle is our lash lifting mascara which is perfect to use as the first mascara in your mascara cocktail. The curved brush instantly lifts lashes and the 360 micro bristles ensure no clumping. This mascara works to target and volumize every lash for length and fanned out volume and an open eye effect lasting up to 24H.
Monsieur Big Mascara
Monsieur Big is our mascara for BIG volume and it serves as the second step in creating a mascara cocktail. Layer Monsieur Big over Lash Idôle for the ultimate mascara combination. The big mascara brush consists of wavy fiber bristles to quickly build volume and deliver the perfect amount of mascara to the lashes.
